The City of Plano
Consideration was given to naming the community after President Millard Fillmore. Instead, the 1840s settlers agreed upon the Spanish word "plano," which simply means flat. The routing of tracks through the area for the Houston and Central Texas Railway stimulated the local economy beginning in 1872. As recently as 1960, however, the population of Plano was less than 4,000. The subsequent growth of the Dallas-Fort Worth area then transformed Plano in dramatic fashion.
