McKinney, Texas, is a prosperous city with about 140,000 residents in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. In 2012, CNN/Money identified McKinney as the second-best place to live in the country. History

The land on which McKinney now rests was largely owned by rancher William Davis. In 1849, he provided 120-acres of his holdings so that a town could be platted here. It would go on to be incorporated as McKinney just a decade later. Collin McKinney had signed the Republic of Texas' Declaration of Independence, and he went on to become a congressman from the Red River district, serving in the Republic's legislature. The community would quickly evolve as an agribusiness center that served ranchers throughout the region.

The tranquility and the beauty at the Heard Natural Science Museum and Wildlife Sanctuary appears in a variety of ways. Butterfly houses attract scores of swallowtail and monarch butterflies that delight visiting children. Birders also come here to witness dozens of bird species in their native eco-system. Nature trails allow visitors to more intimately experience all that the facility offers.

Attractions and Activities

Chestnut Square Historic Village hosts numerous history tours and educational seminars throughout the year. The historic village is located close to the town square.

The Myers Park and Gardens in includes research gardens that include perennials cultivated by the Collin County Master Gardeners. The display of antique farm equipment on the grounds of the farm museum gives visitors a quick glimpse at the farming of yesteryear. The gardens are so beautiful that they regularly attract wedding parties seeking memorable photographs.

Events

The earlier Collin County Courthouse is used today as the McKinney Performing Arts Center. Comedy acts, ballet performances, theatrical plays are scheduled here throughout the year.
